Malamiya Mang Then & Now 2026

Meaning ‘Long Ago and Now’ in Dja Dja Wurrung language, Malamiya Mang celebrates the enduring connection between Dja Dja Wurrung People, Culture and Country. 

This year’s program will feature a rich mix of art exhibitions, cultural workshops and tours, community gatherings and ceremony. Many events are running during the Victorian school holidays.

Program highlights in the shire include:

Biyal Exhibition at Castlemaine Art Museum - Djaara artists and the broader community celebrate the Guildford Big Tree with sculpture, installation and cultural expression.

Possum Skin Culture with Aunty Sandra, 20 September at Castlemaine Art Museum - a workshop giving insight into the way possum skins were and are sewn together to be used for cloaks/blankets, drums and skirts for ceremony. This tradition is a great way to understand Dja Dja Wurrung ways of being and doing.  

Night Country Guided Experience, 22 September at Campbells Creek Oval - enjoy an intimate guided experience, where your Djaara cultural educator will take you on a journey of exploration through Wura wurayi djaa (Sky Country)

Bushtukka with Cassie Fisher-Patterson, 25 September at Castlemaine Art Museum - learn what bush spices look like, how they can be used and how they taste.

Weaving with Aunty Marilyne, 27 September at Castlemaine Art Museum - join Aunty Marilyne Nicholls in a very special two hour workshop in coil weaving with raffia.

BIYAL School Holiday Program, 1 October at Castlemaine Art Museum - Discover Red Gum Culture Workshops at the BIYAL Exhibition for Kids.
