Womin-dji-ka - Welcome

Aboriginal people have lived in this part of Australia known as Victoria for over 60,000 years. The Aboriginal clans who occupied this land prior to European settlement were the Dja Dja Wurrung and Taungurung People. Explore Jaara stories and teachings at our award winning Boorp Boorp Boondyil exhibition space, go on a tour of the region with our local Elder, Uncle Rick Nelson, or take a walk through a self-guided tour.

Boorp Boorp Boondyil

An interactive space to learn about the Dja Dja Wurrung history of the area. Boorp Boorp Boondyil (passing knowledge to our children) invites people to share in Jaara stories and teachings, one of the world’s oldest continuous living cultures.

Uncle Rick's WaaMan Tours

Embark on an enriching journey with Uncle Rick Nelson, a revered Jaara Elder, as he guides you through the heart of Jaara Country. Uncle Rick’s Elder-led cultural tours offer an authentic immersion into ancient traditions and practices.

Understanding Country on the Goldfields Track

The Goldfields Track passes through culturally significant lands of the Dja Dja Wurrung and Wadawurrung people. This Interpretation project was developed in partnership with including Traditional Owners over six key themes: Movement, Seasons, Country, Knowing, Ingenuity and Gathering.

Acknowledgement of Country

Mount Alexander Shire Council acknowledges that the Traditional Custodians of this land, the Dja Dja Wurrung and Taungurung peoples, proudly survive. We acknowledge their continued practise of custom and their close cultural, spiritual, physical, social, historical and economic relationship with the land and waters that make up their Country, which includes Mount Alexander Shire.

Council recognises the Victorian Government’s Recognition and Settlement with both the Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation and the Taungurung Land and Waters Council.
